Need help with my new canon eos 40d?

Today I bought a Canon EOS 40D "body". On trying to use the camera however I have found that I cannot focus it and I cannot get the LCD screen to work. I did not buy the camera with a lense. Do you think this could be the problem? I cannot see why it would be.

  1. As stated above, not a very nice way of answering it, but yes you do need to by a lens (it’s a bit like having a head but no eyes to see).

I would suggest getting a cheap lens to start with such as the 18-55mm canon lens, or their 50mm f/1.8. Both of which are ok but the latter is cheaper and as it is what is known was a 'prime' lens (one that does not zoom).

Once you put the lens on it should work.

I am assuming that when you say you purchased the 40d that you did not have an SLR before, but in the case that you did i am assuming that you have checked your existing lens is set to auto focus mode (there should be a small switch the as an 'A' and a 'M' on it, switch it to 'A'). As for the second problem you might be asking about the live view function on the camera, for this it needs to be in a creative mode (i.e one of the ones above the green square) and then you have to press set I think.

Hope this helps and good luck with your new camera.

  2. Maybe..If you want more zoom focus, but it should focus with the extra lens. Here an one with an extra lens:

    Hope it Helps!

  3. uhh, no S**t sherlock. You need a lens to focus. Sell the 40D and get a camera you can handle, OK? If you didn't realize you need a lens, you probably don't know which one you WILL need, much less any of its other special features.

  5. HI Hayley.   I guess someone has answered your question... though not very tactfully  :( .     I know you are very excited about your new 40D....  but to get it to work,  you will have to have a lens.  I cannot understand why the sales clerk did not mention that to you.    That 40D was pretty expensive and now you will have to spend another $200 - $400 on a lens.    You should look into getting one of the lesser expensive lenses to start out with.  Maybe the 18-55mm.  In my camera bag,  I insist on a telephoto.  I have the 28-200mm along with a few others.   Look online at B&H photo, Adorama, Calumet for some nice quality affordable choices.   Hope you get that lens soon...  you are going to enjoy your new camera a lot :))
