Question:

Need help with planting flowers at a gravesite.?

My mother passed away in June, we decided against having anything engraved on the back of her tombstone. Now looking at it, it seems rather bare. I would like to plant something behind it but I am torn. Should i plant irises and daffodils? I do not want a bush that takes up alot of room but if anyone knows of a compact bush, I would love to know.

I visit her grave site once a week so I need something that does not require a lot of work. Her stone is 3 ft tall by 5 ft wide. We are in zone 6.

She was very fond of greenery.

Any help is appreciated.

  1. I would grow a bunch of Black-Eyed Susans there.

They need a good amount of sunlight, but they are a type of wildflower and grow mostly everywhere especially in zone 6. They also have nice foliage on there stems. Here is a link to what the flower looks like.

You can also try hydrangeas they come in many different colors like blue white and pink and they have wonderful foliage.

  2. Maybe a type of clematis or miniature roses would be nice.I am very sorry for your loss.

  3. whatever you plant, just dig a hole and put the plant and the pot in the ground together. try for some sort of native, something hardy that won't die easily. whatever season your mother was born, choose something that will flower around that time. daffodils seem a nice choice.

  4. I am not familiar with zone 6... a state would be great!  Daffodils and Irises come up in the early spring.( daffodils first)  Go to your local nursery and ask for a compact hedge or bush that is very green all year and has flowers.  Trust me there is something out there that will work.  You mom was lucky to have such a caring daughter!

  5. You should plant the flower of her birth month. Here are the birth month flowers for each  month:

You can try daffodils, one of your suggestions, if her birth month was March.

I didn't see irises mentioned as birth month flowers.

You can also do it based on the meaning of each flower.

    Daffodils represent chivalry.

    Irises represnt inspiration.

Some other flowers by meanings I think would be nice are:

    Gladiolus, representing strength of character.

    Forget-Me-Nots, representing forever.

    Geranium, representing comfort.

    Pansy, representing loving thoughts.

Red tulip, representing declaration of love.

    Aster, representing contentment.

If you want more flowers and their meanings, try this site:

That's where I found all the above meanings, too.

Or you can do it by color:

I think irises are sometimes violet? Well violet represents noble spiritual aspiration.

Daffodils are yellow, representing wisdom and intellect.

Here is where I found the color meanings:

I hope this was helpful in assisting you to make your decision!

    Best wishes, Amanda
