Need help with police report.?

Recently someone broke into my vehicle and stole some expensive items. I found out after work that day and filed a police report but I'm starting to believe it may have been done overnight at my house. Should I contact the officer to make revisions, or leave as is...I believe this is important because it depends on which insurance company I contact. Please advise.

  1. By all means, contact the police and give them this information. Determining where a crime occurred may be beneficial in solving the crime (Several car burglaries in one area may point to specific suspects, or a location where the stolen items might be resold or pawned.)

  2. If I were you, I would go ahead and contact the department with which you filed the report.  Tell the officer why you think the incident occurred at your home.  If the officer does not believe the information to be important, he/she will tell you.  If the information is important then the officer will, more than likely, amend the report.  Your car insurance should cover the loss either way.  However, if your home owner's insurance/renter's insurance would be cheaper as far as the deductible goes, I completely understand.  Good luck to you!

  3. Contact the cop that wrote the report stating that you have additional info you'd like to give.

  4. You should contact the Officer directly and ASAP as revisions to your statement will have to be made. It sounds now like your predicament is whether to claim on your home owners insurance, or on your vehichle insurance. Either way a revision will have to be on file, so don't delay!!

  5. Contact the Police, and give them the additional information.  A supplemental report will be made.  This may be important in regards to a crime pattern.

  6. It's going to look suspicious - first you file a complaint and tell the cops the items were in your trunk and now you tell them the items were in your house?  Insurance company will probably think you found out that car insurance doesn't pay much (if anything) for items stolen from the car so now you're changing the story.....when things look suspicious, insurance companies just deny the claim and wait for you to sue them.
