Need help with putting movies on my iPod...?

I have videos and movies in my iTunes that use Quicktime... But when I plug in my iPod Touch they wont transfer. Some are mp4 files and I am not sure what the others are.. Can someone please tell me how to get them onto my iPod? I have tried to sync it and do it automatically, and nothing works. Do I need to turn them into mp3s? I am so confused... please help!
