Question:

Need help with resume - special education aide?

I'm applying at my daughter's school for a special education aide position. My aunt is also an aide at the school. She said to put as much as I can on my resume about any past experience I have had working with children who have special needs. I babysat for my uncle's children for about a year, and one of them was severely autistic. I also lived with my brother and sister-in-law for half a year and they had a child who was autistic. And the last thing is that I had a child with down syndrome in my nursery class at church. How would you apply these things to a resume? I have a professional resume, but I am needing this job while I am attending college (again), and I just want to spruce up my resume for this position. How would you word these situations on a resume? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. You could do as I have done on my current resume -- under a heading of "Disabilities" list those that you have experience with.

  2. Definitely use those people that you have babysat or worked for in the past as references. I would suggest that when you put down on there about working with kids with autism or down syndrome, just put

----experience working with (pre-school, early elementary etc) aged children with downs/autism-----

You don't need to specify an exact age..

  3. I would include a section of previous experience working with children and just list the length of time you have worked with them and what disabilities they have.  You don't need to put how they are realated to you, just put

-Child care for 5 year old with Autism from - to -

-Child care fo 7 year old with Down Syndrome from - to -

I would also recommend putting one of these people down as a reference.

  4. I used this resume writing service in my area, this is the email address, (resume.help50@yahoo.com) you should try them, it only cost me $35.00 and I got a great job from this new resume, I never thought about the format that they use but the turn around time was less then 24 hrs.  I would have to say it was the best service I have ever used and it was worth every dime.  Also they let me pay through paypal.

  5. You can describe these jobs as:

Uncle's children - Baby sitting - date and then include under duties care of x amount of children including 1 special needs child (special needs child looks better but you could say child with severe autism - one thing to remember is to use people first language, it will look better to a prospective employer and also reminds you what your attitude towards individuals with disabilities should be)

Brother/sister-in-law - Baby sitting or live in nanny (it depends on how much responsibility you had for the children) same as for uncle's children

Nursery class sunday school teacher or assistant - taught nursery class aged children religion related topics, assisted special needs child (or child with down's syndrome) with the tasks, etc which were completed pursued in this class

    I hope this helps
