  1. Technically, according to etiquette, your only real duties as Maid of Honor are to purchase/wear the dress selected for you by the bride, stand up for her and the groom at the wedding, sign the certificate if necessary, and support your friends in their marriage. In terms of costs, you're expected to pay for your dress (if the bride is not buying it for you), alterations, accessories and shoes, hair and makeup (if the bride asks for it), transportation, and any hotel or other accommodations you'll need to participate in the wedding. Sometimes, the bride or her family will cover these costs, but plan on paying for it yourself unless told otherwise.

Some brides do have additional expectations of their Maids of Honor, so you'll need to speak with her to find out what she is expecting of you. It's often fun (and sometimes expected) to go dress shopping with the bride, and to accompany her on other planning trips, such as to select flowers or check out a venue, or taste cake samples. She might also want you to help with invitations or other planning activities. Many brides want their MOH to host or plan a bridal shower, bachelorette party, and other pre-wedding events, and if your friend wants you to do these, plan to spend some money on them. A wedding gift is not mandatory, but is a very nice gesture, so plan on paying for that as well.

The key thing is to communicate with your friend. If you do this, and support her throughout the planning process, you'll be an excellent MOH!

  2. I honestly don't think there's a real instruction manual for responsibilities and duties. And if there was, then the bride would print you a copy of it :)

Your biggest responsibility is to be there for her and help her pick stuff out and help on the big day and give a toast. The rest is really up to both of you and your availability and what she needs you to do.

Just go for a nice lunch and figure out what she needs you to do.

    All the best :)
