Need help with son's car....?

It's a 1999 Mercury Cougar with a manual shift. He shifted from 1st gear to 2nd, and now it's stuck in 2nd gear. Someone suggested it may be the clutch, but he wasn't having any problems with the clutch before this happened. Just last week he put in a new battery, new alternator & new alternator fuse. Any suggestions for things to look for? I truly appreciate any help!!!

  1. tell him to start it up and let the clutch out without giving it any gas, it might jar it loose.

  2. Is it mechanically stuck such as you cannot move it from the 2nd gear location on the shifter? or can you move the shifter around and its always in 2nd gear? if you can move the shifter then its a problem with your transmission cables leading to the gear linkages.

If you cant move the gear selector at tall then its a jam at the transmission, which it most likely is from shifting too fast.

I dont think its the clutch. Think about this for a bit. If you have a manual transmission car, and its off you can actually change gears without pushing in the clutch. Thats because the tires and engine are not moving and there is no difference in speed between the trans and the engine.

  3. worn gear linkages or worst case fault in gear box

  4. clutch can go bang....check fluid first...he may have stretched shift cable or jammed it in 2 gears "speed shifting"
