Need help with stray dog's ears!?

Am traveling in India. One my friends has taken in a street dog here. She's got her shots and is spayed now but I don't think she has ever had her ears cleaned. The dog looks like a lab mix and I'm guessing she's around six years. Her ears look junky and smell a little, the vet here gave my friend a bottle of betadine! I would never put that in my lab's ears back in the US! I have purell hand sanitizer, clean cotten and water. Any way I can clean her ears with the above or some simple ingredients?...what I would give for a bottle of ear cleaner from home.

Thanks for all your help. It is quite heartbreaking to see the street dogs here...worlds apart from our own pampered pooches.

The dog probably has a bacterial infection, not just dirty ears. If the dog has been scratching, the hand sanitizer might burn the dog, but it sounds better than the betadine or better than leaving it.
