Need help with the FAFSA! The "My Finances"section.?

I am filling out the FAFSA and this is the first time I've had to fill out the financial section for myself because I worked last year. I did not file because my mom claimed me and so I'm not sure which option to choose when it comes to my section of the form.

"For 2007, have you completed your IRS income tax return or another tax return (question 32)?"

options: already filed, will file, not going to file.

If my mom claimed me does that mean I filed my taxes?

Please HELP!!! THANKS!

  1. If you did not file a 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ then you need to select the "not going to file" option.  If you worked but didn't file your taxes don't worry.  There is another question that will ask you how much you made.  Just because you made some money doesn't means that you have to file.  There is a limit at which you are required to file.  I think it is if you make over $10,000 for the year.

  2. Your mom claiming you on her taxes does not have anything to do with you filing your taxes.

If you didn't file (or you don't know what it is) you didn't file... obviously.  So you would select "Will not file" and then enter the amount from box 1 on your W2 forms when it asks you "How much did you earn from working?"

Usually you have to earn over around 3,000 dollars.  But if you earn less than that you will prob get ALL the money they with held from your paychecks.  By not filing, you are just giving the IRS your money.

  3. did you make enough money last year to file taxes? If no, mark you've already filed

  4. If you worked and made more than the maximum to exempt you from filing, you need to file your own taxes.  It doesn't matter if your mom claimed you as a dependent or not.  Taxes were due by April 15th so you are late.  If you did make more then the maximum to be exempt, you will need to mark "will file" and go back into the FAFSA after you've completed your tax returns.

If, by chance, your mom filed your taxes for you, you're OK and can mark "already filed", but you need to ask her if she did your taxes too.
