"In mathematics, two quantities are called proportional if they vary in such a way that one of the quantities is a constant multiple of the other, or equivalently if they have a constant ratio."

I am having trouble grasping this concept in Physics class. This was never explained to me properly and now I am seeking help. Please explain this to me in simple terms?

Does it pretty much just mean corresponding? Thank you in advance.

  1. If one quantity is called x and the other is y, then they are proportional if x/y is always the same number.
