"the root cause for the cold war was the US presence in europe as an empire by invitation." what does this mean??

the countries in Europe needed help, and the US provided it (financially) and this created influence (a sort of soft empire (see Peter H. Smith's book on empire)) with their need for help being the invitation. the Soviets were threatened by the US's influence so near to their border, and were afraid of capitalism being chosen in the republics after the German Fall.

It means that the cold war started becuase The USSR started building or more like dominating smaller nations they called satalite nations. The Us being the other Superpower of the world came back with a policy of containment trying to rollback the spread of communism. Both sides built up little empires but not exactly in that much power.
