  1. Democrats are usually socially liberal (no, Democrat and liberal are not the same thing, since Democrat is a party and liberal is a position.) That means they're usually "for" the following: a woman's right to choose, affirmative action, g*y rights and marriage, stem cell research, stricter gun control, a secular government (when religion doesn't come in to political decisions), and universal health care.  They want the government to spend more on fighting injustice (social), even if we end up paying more taxes.

Republicans are usually socially conservative and fiscally conservative. They are usually "for" the following: overturning Roe v. Wade, restriction of marriage rights regarding g*y people, absistence-only s*x education, allowing people to pray in school; and are usually "against" immigration, gun control, a secular government, welfare, raised taxes, and universal healthcare. Fiscal conservatives--part of the Republican party--want lower taxes, and less government spending on things like healthcare and welfare. Libertarians are another section of the Republican party.

Those who tend to be in each group:

--Democrats: Educated professionals "Once dominated by unionized labor and the working class, the Democratic base now consists of social liberals who tend to be well-educated as well as the socially more conservative working class"...and young people, g**s/lesbians, college professors, less wealthy people, women and ethnic minorities as well.

--Republicans: White men; married couples with kids; wealthier people, those in the military, and the very religious.
