Need ideas on a substitute material?

I grow container plants. We space these plants out in 3 foot spacings. We cover the ground with black plastic to supress weeds. As we irrigate these pots water stands under the pot on the plastic and causes us problems with root rot. So I am looking for ideas on what I could place the pots on. I considered buying concrete stepping stons and putting them on top of the plastic then setting the pot on. I wonder if anyone knows of something that would work better? I dont want anything tall because of wind- 2-3 inches tall would be ok. Secondly they need to not hold or absorb water so the pots can drain between waterings. And finally they need to be cheap becasue we need 1440 of them. Any ideas will help!

  1. What about burlap? Water would drain through. and keep other greenery from coming through. You may just have to relay it again next year, as I would think it would decompose.

Just an idea. Or how about something called crush -n - run. Really fine  crushed gravel.I now live here in Georgia and it is used mainly for driveways. Just a couple of ideas. Good Luck!

  2. strips of old carpet

  3. Isn't there a netting type material that keeps out weeds, yet drains well? Check with a nursery or somewhere like Lowes.
