Hi, I am a preschool teacher and need ideas for a sensory corner (sensopathic corner) relating to colours or shapes. I can use anything liquid (except water). Please give me ideas!! I was thinking of using oil and sugar- but i'm not sure how to relate it to the theme mentioned above.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Here are some quick ideas off the top of my head.

    - Fill the tub with foam shapes so students can feel all the pieces as they dig their hands in.  They can then also sort by color, shape, and size. Just buy the precut shapes, but then cut some extra large shapes so students can have fun with sizes as well.

    - Use shaving cream (or Cool whip it doesn't last as long) add a few drops of color to mix it each day.  This way you can work on color mixing skills.

    - Dye pasta different colors (use food coloring and rubbing alchol) Then students can sort by size, shape, and color.

    - Use soap in different colors (dish soap/handsoap) and fill different shapes.  You can buy plastic shapes that split into two pieces and then students can fill their hearts pink and squares green.

    - Make gak (recipies online) and fill your tub with little tubs of various colors.  Let students try to mix and then use the plastic shapes mentioned above.

  2. Try harder!

  3. How about you have cardboard boxes of different colours with a hole (big enough for a little hand to fit in) at the top.

Inside each box you place something - sugar, plastic bottle of juice (a shaped bottle the children will be familiar with), felt material, crayon etc. Each child places hand in the box and has to say what they think is inside the red, blue, pink box......

  4. I have one that I use for sensory play that transfers to all my other center in the classroom. It is very simple, all you need is

    Shredder

    Bright color paper

    Big Bin

    Imagination

Shred the paper and put it into a bin.

The children can use this in science to measure and weigh

Dramatic Play they can make many different foods

Emergent Math/Art They can sort the colors, take the paper and glue the paper into different shapes.

The center should have a shredder and should already have many different colors in the shredder to begin with.

E-mail me if you need other ideas.

  5. You could put sand in the water table with different shape cups or containers so they can actually make the shapes in the sand.

  6. i am a developmental specialist at a school for delayed children and in the past we have tried mixing mixing hair gel with sand.  it feels so neat.  you may also put it in a zip lock bag and it gives it a different texture.

  7. I don't know what your asking but MABE I have somewhat an idea where your going with this,if my answer doesn't help I apologize.

Mabe the little kids could make a shapes puzzle with foam (like the $0.20 types)or let them be blindfolded and let them try to feel what type of shapes they are holding.Oh and for colors, you could have a little contest for them hold out a color and let them tell each  other and have like a captain or guess the shape and color tic tac toe!(if they get the answer right they can put an X or O)

  8. paint in ziplock bags

they can write letters etc on the bags.               tape the seals of the bags for safety

jello                       oil and water bottles.                 do wet sand, playdough, rice, or jello powder for an area where the kids can make their own shapes

as an extention the following week, the kids can make shapes on geoboards if you can borrow some and introduce them this week.

  9. I've used powder gelatin and had the kids draw the shapes into the powder.
