I have heard that a router will let me and my son use 2 computors at the same time. Is this true? If it is--what is a good one to purchase? Oh.. in case you need to know... they are both desk tops.

  1. Yes you are right. A router will route your Internet connection to more computers (usually up to 4 wired connections).

I would recommend a Linksys router.

  2. Marge, if you buy a router from your ISP then they will help you set it up over the phone.

If not then buy one that has a 24hour hotline support  eg D link

  3. it depends if you are on dialup connection or broadband connection.

broadband connection like cables or ADSL, in this case you can use the router, make sure to buy a router with more than 1 port ( usually it will be 4 ports)

dialup connection, is when you use your telephone line to call certain number to connect to the internet, in this case you cannot use the router. but here still another solution by sharing the  dialup connection between the 2 computers

you have then to follow the following steps:

1- right click on the dial-up connection, choose properties, click on advanced tab,

2-check on the box beside "allow other network users to connect...."

    4- press OK

5- connect the 2 computer via "crossover ethernet  cable" and make sure that the other computer obtains ip automatically

    enjoy !

  4. The desktop may not close setting to your modem.  You can get a router and two wireless receivers (for your desktops).

The connections: Modem to router signal in) with Ethernet cable.  You can connect the router between router and desktop with Ethernet cable (wired) and setup another desktop wireless.

The router makes your desktop share your ISP service.

  5. You don't need a route to use your computer at the same time. However, if you want both computers to connect to the Internet at the same time, then you can use a router yes.

If the computers are next to each other, then both can use an Ethernet Connection (cable running from the router to the computer).

Otherwise, you need ONE computer next to the phone line (where you currently have your modem) and the other can be somewhere else in the house and use a wireless connection - you may need to purchase a Wireless Adapter card for this computer to allow it to connect to the router with no cables (because the distance may be too far for a cable).
