I want to get into horse racing, but I don't have a clue about what the rules of the sport are, traditions, etc. Can anyone give me a detailed general fill in on the sport & I guess if I have any questions further, I'll ask again. Thanks in advance for any help!

  1. Ask jocko he is an honest bloke

  2. when you get there buy a race card.  the booklets with all the info on who is running in each race. there will be a section in it on how to read the info on the horse in the booklet which will tell you who the owner , trainer, jockey are. the age , color and breeding of the horse and how its been running this season.

when your betting  :  its done in odds  so if the odds are  5/1 and the horse wins then you get $5 for every $1 you bet.

if you bet each way it means that the horse can win or place (2nd or 3rd) .   if you want $5 each way  then you pay them  $5 to win and $5 to place. so its really $10 . you never really win back that much money if your horse places.

before each race the horses will be walked around a parade ring , you will be able to go have a good look at them there and see the jockeys mount. then they head to the starting gates and then race!  then the winner goes back to the parade ring for prize presentations and stuff like that .

I hope you enjoy yourself at the races, its really good fun.

  3. Take it from me ,pick your favorite name of the horse you like in each race .And bet how much you wont towards a place bet that means that your horse can Finnish first or second and you still win.

  4. Im a jockey by trade here in Australia,any info,go to www.racenet.com.au

  5. My suggestion is learn to read the "past performance".

Some past performances are free. You can download some at bris.com

drf.com  sometimes has one or two free ones.

Initially it will look like Chinese [nothing against the Chinese]

If you can hang out with someone that knows how to read them, you can ask questions.

It will take a little bit of time to understand them.

There are books you can read to learn how to read the past performance.

    Horse racing for dummies. Maybe
