  1. RESEARCH REASEARCH RESEARCH READ READ READ. the Pony Club manuals are fantastic. do your homework !!!!!!!!!! extremely important.

  2. 1. Take lessons FIRST

    2. There are shots for Parvo/distemper your dogs could still be alive if you were responsible enough to get them.

    3. Horses are VERY expensive!

    4. Horses take ALL of your free time.

    5. They require MORE attention/care than a dog.

    6. Leasing would be MUCH better for a beginner

Sorry to hear about your dogs though but don't get a horse.

IF you were to get a horse get one that was used as a lesson horse that is older than 10 and NOT a stallion or mare!

  3. I'm soo sorry to hear about all of your dogs =(. It doesn't sound as if you are ready for a horse quite yet. Do some research on horses first, visit some horse farms, and maybe even take riding lessons. This way you can just become more experienced and comfortable with them. Hope I helped =/

  4. Please find someone near you who owns a horse. Ask what s/he pays for hay, stall rent, grain, vet bills, and farrier bills in an average year.

PLEASE educate yourself about horse management elsewhere, OK?  It's very easy to buy a horse--there are even free horses out there--but it's very expensive to maintain one, and they are big enough to kill you without even realizing what they've done.

If you have never owned a horse before, I strongly advise against buying one that is under a year old.  This would require you to raise and train the horse yourself, and that is not a job for someone who has never owned a horse before.  I have owned a horse, but I still wouldn't buy one under the age of four years (full grown) and which had not already been trained to ride.

I'm not gonna score any thumbs or points here, but I hope you'll read on anyway.  I cannot tell you how fervently I'm wishing and hoping this post is a joke.  If it isn't, Y!A is not the place to ask these questions.  Ask someone who knows.

Your three dogs died of a perfectly preventable disease, and you now want to acquire an animal that costs much, much, MUCH more money and time to keep healthy and happy?  No, no, NO.  You're just not ready for a horse.  For one thing, horses need vaccines too, and your track record on obtaining such is not good, is it?

A grown female horse (4 years or older) is called a mare.  A young female horse is called a filly.  A gelding is a neutered male and a stallion is an intact male.

  5. I am SO sorry about your dogs.  My last pony and dog died on the same day!

What I suggest is that you don't get a yearling.  Even if you don't want to ride, I suggest you don't get a yearling.  It will be unhappy by its self, and they require alot of handling for them to be friendly when their older, and from what you wrote it doesn't sound like you know how to do this.

I suggest getting a horse that's around 6.  This is the friendly age where a horse/pony is curious, so if you introduce yourself to it, they'll basically go "Hey, will you pweeeeeez be my friend?"

Horses are really expensive though.  I mean you may get your horse for free, but horses are such strong animals, yet they get sick or injured very easily.  My pony of 4 years now was like the sturdiest little thing you could ever imagine. He didn't require a lot of food, the shoer didn't need to time him up, and he rarely had to see the vet besides when he got stung by a bee.  Yet, on the first of January of this year, eh coliced and we had to take him to UC Davis, where he ended up getting colic surgery.

That ran my parents 15 grand.

I would think this over, it's a hard job.

This should help. I suggest going to buy a horse at a breeding place. Or just look at a newspaper. They have ads on horses. You are right about the male horse.

  7. wow dogs dont get parvo unless they are kept in poor conditions. u have alot to learn missy. i think you need to seriously consider the resposibility issue. a horse costs allot of money. depending on your area a good horse goes for 2,000 to 25,000 dollars. also at first you will be paying 10,000 for tack and supplies. you need to bored your horse somewhere that costs 200-900 per month depending on where you live. and all in all a horse per year with vet costs and shoes and floating the teth and food and everything costs between 10,000 to 14,000 dollars. thats alllllooooot of money. heres what you should do. right now you dont know enough about horses to keep one alive for a week. you know that. i say lookn at some barns in your area and take lessons and learn about horses that way. the way you said your daddy is just going to buy you a horsey is a very bad idea. a horse is somthing that lives for 30 years and takes alot of time and training and alot of cash. you have to do alot more reaserch on horses before you make a bad desision.

  8. You DO NOT need to get a horse!!! I can't stress that enough.

You need to go take lessons first. Because you don't know anything about the care of a horse or any animal for that matter that is obvious. Nor do your parents otherwise your three dogs wouldn't have died from the same disease back to back to back. There are vaccinations for Parvo and it's apparent they were never given them.

What kind of ridiculous parents just so ok that one is died let's move on to the next?  This whole post is just so sad!!!

  9. im so srry i had a golden doodle that had parvo =(

i found my horse online under a search engine (google* horses for sale )(horse classifids)

craigslist also is very good they have everything

yes a female horse is called a mare but a gelding is also a name for a girl and a boy im not sure what the difference is (srry bout that)

this is how much i pay for my pony (its more for a horse)

$2500 pony(some are less some are more)

$120 month stable staw and hay

    $100 good grooming kit

    $350 sadle

    $50 bridle(you can find some for $15 or $20)

$120 for my riding boots(plain tennis shoes work

$50 for my hard hat(bike helment works

$45 every 8 weeks for shoes

    $45 month feed

and then vets bills on top of that plus dentist visits and regular worming

  10. i dont mean to sound rude, but it doesnt sound as though you are ready for a horse!!

i suggest having lessons, helping at a riding school and gaining some experience with horses, as the knowledge comes along with it.

  11. Guys don't be mean she is obviously upset! I am very sorry to hear about your dogs =(

Horses are very expensive which I am sure are aware of. They cost a minimum of $300 dollars or so a month to look after (mine costs $1500 per month and I am not showing at the moment). They should not be ridden until they 3 years old. You must be VERY experience to train a horse so you might be better getting a 10 year old or older horse ( they can be ridden well into their 20's if they are properly cared for).

If you do plan to get a horse you should spend this summer helping at a barn to see if you like what is involved and to gain some experience. you should also get lessons and read as many books as you can.

    All horses need:

~ good hay (as much as they want)

    ~access to clean water

~ to be wormed every other month

    ~ vaccinations every year

~ feet trimmed every six weeks

    ~ teeth floated every year

~vet care at least once a year (and obviously when they are sick/injured)

~ shelter from the sun and bad weather

They also need a list longer than I am willing to type of other things but unless you can provide the basic things above 100% without question a horse is not for you.

  12. OK first it doesn't sound as though you know much about horses but that can be fixed as long as you board at a stable and get to know how horses act in different ways. Do not get a yearling(year old horse) You will be overwelmed. It would be a good two years before you ride. Horses can live 30-35 years if cared for and vaccined. The cost of a horse is ruffly 3000 dollars a year and that's without start up costs like the

    horse 1000

saddle, bridle, blanket, bit, breastcollar (cheap) 1000 Grooming aids 100

    sheet, halter, lead 200

buckets, muck gear ( for cleaning stalls) 100

    Your riding gear(boots pants)  300

and much much more...It's not a walk in the park...You need to find out if your going to ride english or western and get lessons (20-30 dollars a lesson)

Please think about if you want to go though all that work and if you can take the responsiblity!!

    Good luck

  13. Do you know what puppyfind is? well if you search horses for sell then you can find horses for sell based on color, breed, size, area, age, and discipline. Thoses are some of the best ways to find the perfect horse for you. I wish my parents were cool enough to get me a horse!! Good luck ;)!!!
