  1. Find a merc. dealer and ask him for some help, he will be more than happy to help you.

  2. First, I recommend you find a marine mechanic you can trust and have the outboard motor checked out as "preventative maintenance".  There are many hidden things an outside inspection cannot reveal about an outboard or a lower unit on a sterndrive for an inboard/outboard.

They "should" do the following:  put it on a hose and run it, possibily a compression check, and test the linkage.  Then pull the lower unit, check the impeller and the impeller pump.  Put the lower unit back on, pressure test the lower unit, if okay fill with lower unit oil and it should be done.

If you EVER known that the outboard was previously run Without water (must be in water or hose fed), you need to have the impeller checked out.  Do not run an outboard for even 1 second without water to cool it.  This is a rule that could and usually does cost you thousands of dollars if you choose to break it.

Finally, since it sounds from your question you are new to boating.  It is very important that you take some time to educate yourself and your family on proper boating safety rules, local boating laws and regulations (not knowing is not a defense against a ticket).  It will also protect the lives of you and your passengers.

It is also important to educate yourself on preparing your boat and trailer for the trip to the water, and on learning the ritual of launching and recovering your boat.  Yes, you can make some expensive mistakes on this process if you don't do it right.

you might try to contact mercury here and see if they can help.

You also might try a dealer for help. You definately need water to run or you will damage the water pump. This may be a four stroke engine and there would be no gas/oil mix. Don't attempt to start it till you know what you are doing.
