  1. You need to get a U.S. psaaport before going to Mexico. It is not requireded for LAND travel now, but will be by next summer, so you NEED it.  The baby must have one too.  You may go to Mexico on a tourist card for 6 months.  You get the tourist card on the plane if you fly or at the border if you drive.  it costs about $22.00.  it must be renewed at the border or an immigration office after 6 months.  You CANNOT get an FM3 visa ( a visa good for residing in Mexico for one year at a time) unless you can proove you have at least $1500.00 a month income from the Therefore, the tourist card is the way to go for now.  You will find life in mexico to be VERY different than in the states.  you will not be allowed to get a job in Mexico without a work visa, and these are nearly impossible to get, especially if you do not have a college degree or high tech skills.  MANY young women in your position write in here about wanting info to follow the baby'father to Mexico.  I often does not work out. Ijust want you to be wise and safe.  Do NOT  cut ties with your family, do NOT go to Mexico without passports for you and the baby.  Be sure you have resources to return home if andwhen you are ready to.   If you are going to drive to Mexico and the car is in his name, it must be more than 10 years old for him to be able to nationalize it.  If you are taking a car that is in your name, you will have to get a car permit when you cross the border. See website below for car info.  You will also need  Mexican car insurance.    again, be sure you and the baby have passports and birth certificates so you will have no trouble visiting the U.S. or moving back to the U.S.  Be careful, wise and good luck to you.

  2. One correction on Charlie's post - you can't renew/extend a Tourist visa in Mexico if the original was for 6 months - you need to leave the country.

Also ... a single parent with child needs a notarized letter from the other parent stating that the child can travel to Mexico with you

You should be able to find the info you need here.

  4. All you need is a passport for you and the baby. Don't forget to take with you ids. Obviously as much clothing as you can. And all the stuff for your baby. Life in Jalisco is going to be very different but it's safe and there are a lot of friendly people.
