I had a question similiar like this about my w-2, but i found out what i really needed was my tax return. so this is a new question:

need info from my tax return because i can't find the copies my mom made me since they've already been mailed off. (because i've been moving by stuff out of my dorm back into my old room at home). hopefully i'll find them soon, but just in case, could i call the tax place that did them to get info? or what else could i do? I may need them for the fafsa (i know the deadline passed) because sometimes the school wants to see them before classes start in the fall just in case. what should i do?

  1. Your tax prep firm is required to keep a copy for at least three years.  They can make you a copy and they will charge you a fee.  Hopefully you used somebody who is open year around like HR Block.  Block has at least one office open in every city and they will charge you about $18 for a copy.  I don't know about the bottom feeders - most close up tight as a drum on April 16.

If you can't get one from them, you can get one from the IRS by downloading and filing Form 4506 but it will cost you.

If you just need the numbers that were on the forms and a proof of filing, you can request a transcript for free by downloading and filing Form 4506-T (choose "A" for question 6 on that form).  The transcript won't look like a form but it will have all the numbers you need for FAFSA in a list, like:

      Line 7 $20000

      Line 15 $2000

      Line 21 $100

    ....

and if you have done FAFSA before,  you know that is all you need.

  2. You can use Form 4506-T, as VB suggests, but if you need it sooner you can call the IRS at 1-800-829-0922.

  3. IRS form 4506-T.  The school is happy to accept a FREE computer transcript from the IRS.

  4. If you had them professionally done, you can get a copy.  Some places charge a small fee.  If you. or your mom, did them yourself, you can call the IRS and get a copy.  There is a fee with that.  You should be able to find the info on irs.gov!

  5. Call the tax preparer.  You can get one from the IRS but it takes up to 60 days and costs $39.00

  6. The tax place should definitely have a copy. They might charge you a fee for sending you one, but it shouldn't be much.
