  1. It depends on how long you are going honestly.

Eating can vary depending if you eat out a lot or cook at where you are. I mix up, eat lunch out and dinner at my place. Hostels are not too expensive and you can actually rent rooms too for more privacy. Taxi's are metered by euro and start off with a base price. Gifts can vary depending on what you want.

When I go for two weeks I take about 3 grand with me, that is about 2300 Euro or so after money exchange.

You will need converters for anything that you have electric. I suggest a Rail pass if on extended stay over driving, the buses are great too.

If you need to know any more email me glad to help. I go there every year.

  2. Here some figures for Berlin:

    Flight: around Euro 800

    Hostels:  around Euro 20

Taxi: from Airport to downtown Euro 20

But in Berlin you can take the bus or underground for Euro 2,40

Food: fast food on the street: count Euro 4 per meal

  3. If you go to any airline website, they can give you a basic idea of traveling cost...

I wish i could help you and tell you my trip costs, but i'm staying with my fiance's family, so... that part will be free.

My ticket for a two week stay was only 760.00$, but i also booked six months in advance (that's the big cheater, book EARLY)

All together just for a flight and passport i have paid near 1000 dollars. So just depending on the length of your trip i'd guess from 2500-3500... ish, those would be general lengthy trips.

  4. Well, my ex-girlfriend's sister made it to 300 euros on the first day; she just went shopping clothes and shoes and finally had to borrow money from us (which she never paid back). But she was 16, so what?

Eating, to start with your first question, is really cheap and delicious in Berlin. Besides from the famous "Döner Kebap", the Turkish delicacy, there are some small Thai, Indian and Arab-Morrocan restaurants, which I all found delicious.

The taxi service is wonderful, and not too expensive, compared to other German cities. But the public transport service also is wonderful; Berlin has one of the best public transport networks I know, and the plans at the stations are somewhat understandable. So you won't necessarily need a taxi; just a "city atlas" from one of the BVG (Berliner Verkehrsgesellschaft) stores, or ask for it at a ticket counter. You can also feel safe while waiting for the U-Bahn: It's all video-surveilled, and every 20 meters or so, there is an emergency button to press, with immediate connection to emergency central. So you can stay out late without fear.

About hostels, you should have a look on the internet. It depends very much whether you want to have one of the "internatrional youth hostels" or rather an "adult hostel" with less than eight persons in a room. As to me, I never like these multiple-persons-dorms, and I'd opt for a more expensive version, if I could afford.

How expensive the souvenirs get, again, it's like the flight: This is up to you. Buy what you like, but take care of your budget. And one general hint, as it's your first travel: Don't buy everything you see just because it appeals to you. Look at some other things, and then, maybe, return.
