  3. If you Google you'll find heaps of information.

  4. Whoa! That's a lot information you are asking for!

Look at Italy in the map! it's surrounded by the mediterranian sea almost completely, that and being in the middle of the ancient world gave them the supremacy in comerce and comunication over the rest of their competidors. It was almost impossible to block or control their expansion.

Rome and Verona exist since roman times, even before that. Venice on the other hand appeared at the end of the roman empire, people from the northeast were suffering from many barbarian invations (ostrogoths) so as a last resource they decided to make a city away from the mainlad over a lagoon (barbarians were not sailors). During the Bizantine empire the roman empire was divided in two, the east roman empire with it's capital Constantinopolis (now Istambul, Turkey) and the west with it's capital Ravenna, this city not far south from Venice, Verona in the mainand belongs to the same distric of Venice, The Veneto.

When Napoleon invaded Italy he gave away part of the Veneto to their allies  Austria in 1801, 66 years later Veneto was recovered by the Italians.

The republic of Venice (now the capital of Veneto) was a very powerful naval force during the middle ages, their simbol is a winged Lion with a paw on the bible, specificaly on the evangelion according to Mark, because in the middle ages, venicians recovered St. Marks corpse from Alessandria, Egypt, avoiding muslim gards by putting it underneath pork meat. They burried him under the basilica that has his name and so he is the patron of the city.

I hope these pointers help you searching for more detailed information on the internet.
