I have a dog we just adopted yesterday and he is covered in fleas. I gave him a treatment tube of frontline plus yesterday when we got him but I still see fleas crawling on him. How long does frontline take to work? I am wondering if I should buy him Capstar from the vet and give him the pill to get rid of flea and then keep using the frontline monthly? Or should i just wait for the frontline plus to work? How much does a tablet for Capstar cost at your vet? Thanks!

  1. If the Frontline doesn't do it, take the dog to your vet and get him a Capstar, it is cheap enough and very effective - gets all the fleas off within the hour (sooner usually).

When I get a foster in who is infested with fleas, first thing I do is get him a Capstar, then I give him a bath - then I put on Advantix (Frontline is fine, but you need Frontline Plus if you want to keep ticks off too).

In really severe infestations, Capstar is what you need for the first de-flea treatment, then you put the monthly topical liquid on once the dog is flea free.

  2. frontline will take 24 hrs to kill the fleas on him.  you will also need to flea spray your whole house and car.  maybe bath him as well to get rid of the flea dirt and soothe his skin.

  3. Capstar will kill all the fleas living on your dog and given as directed they are quite safe. A good bath does wonders for flea control also! Good luck!
