Hey

So can you list french films specifically showing one or both of the following:

A. french high school and/or middle school kids and/or teaching in such schools (relatively modern, not way older films). I need to get a good idea of what high school/middle school and high schoolers/middle schoolers are like in france...so anything in that realm will help.

B. Films that take place/show the city of Nantes, or take place in the pays-de-la-loir region.

Thanks!

  1. You would better learn if you have the opportunity to watch TV shows I talk about below (* means it's really talking about school)

Films taking place in First school (grammar school)

-* Le maître d'école (1981)    (the school teacher)

    - La classe de neige (1993)   (educationnal schooltrip in mountains)

    - La boum (1980)  (the dancing party)  most of the movie taking place out of the school.

Films taking place in the city of Nantes :

    - Mercredi folle journée (2001) talking also about kids but the day (wednesday) when there's no school

  2. P.R.O.F.S ( 1985 )

    Les sous doués ( 1980 )

  3. Le Peril Jeune

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110922/

    just a bit 'old' :

This is one of the very few teenage movies that can be watched over and over again. It is the simple story of a group of teenagers in the mid 70s, with nothing really exceptional happening (no serial killers, no alien abductions,...), just the life of this group of teenagers who are very well written and acted : Almost everyone can find himself in one of the key figures of the movie. That's what makes it a movie you can watch over and over again. The plot manages to "link" intelligently the different sequences, a task in which most wanna-be realistic teenagers movies fail.

  4. You have to see "Les choristes".

It shows the story in a school in center of France for some bad boys of about 10 years old in the years fifties.

With Gerard Jugnot, who is a comic french actor but serious in this film....

Good film to cry with emotion, one of the boys sing so well....

  5. L'etudiante, Sophie Marceau and Vincent Lindon

  6. For A: We don't usually make films about high school like american teen movies. There are films with youg people but not in school. At least there is no recent(90's et then) good film about it. You can watch the documentary called "Etre et avoir" about a teacher in a little country school with adorable young children. It's really great!! There is also 'L'esquive" it's a film about teenagers in what we called "cités". Cesar of best film 2005.

About B:I don't have any in mind, sorry. What do you wanna know about Nantes?

About cbo257 suggestions, they are good. But "Le peril jeune" shot during early 90's take place in the 60's..."La boum" is a stupid film, but show a bit of french youth.

  7. If you really want to see the average modern french teenager, you can watch "hellphone" which is very recent (2006).

You must know that in France, school is not very common in movies (unlike american movies). It's not something remarquable in our lifes, even highschool. We don't do "students reunions" when we're older.

You can watch "l'école pour tous" too.

Oh i'd have so many things to tell you about france ! :) If you need more informations, email me (i'm desesperately looking for english speaking friends !!! lol)

  8. For A  Quite a few were made on that subject in the 80's:

"La Boum", "La Boum 2",  "Le Pion", "Profs",

there is another one by Cedric Klapish, taking place in high school called "le peril jeune" set in the 70's but filmed in the 90's.

there are 2 documentaries one on the middle school called "deja grands" and one on high school "Le lycee, ma vie et moi".

For B, I have no idea but you could ask on the French Yahoo! a lot of people will answer you.

Please note that the movies I mentioned might be hard to find in English...you can try the Renaud Bray website in Canada (if you live in the US, ship is less expensive) or the FNAC website in France.

  9. I love Nantes!!!  Yesss!!!  For French films set in Nantes or Pays-de-la-Loire try checking out films from Jacques Demy, or his wife Agnes Varda; most of their films are filmed in the region.

    Here is an incomplete list:

    Lola (1960)

    Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964)

    Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967)

I believe that "Les Demoiselles de Rochefort" shows both of what you are looking for.

As far as modern films set in French high schools or middle schools I don't think I can help you.

Nantes is a great town; I loved it so much when visiting I bought an apartment there.  It is Frances best kept secret.  Most Americans have never heard of it so there aren’t too many tourists!
