Need opinions on hostels in Italy. Family with three girls, 22, 19, 18. Will we be safe?

Planning a trip to Italy and need to keep expenses down. Some hostels sound very nice and we could actually book as a family and not be in a coed, dorm-style room. Can anyone recommend one, or perhaps discourage me if this is a totally stupid idea. Thanks, Marcia
