  1. The best places to look are places like ebay or craigslist.com. Most of the suitable cages for rats in Petstores will cost at least between $60 amd $100. I saw one just the other day that was a guinea pig cage that would be ok for 2 rats and she was selling it for like $25. The problem is it had a plastic bottem. I have had these and my rats would chew through the base in like 2 hours and then I would have to hunt them down. There is a cage on Petsmart.com that is called a All living things Guinea pig cage. This would be ok for a little while and only 2 rats would be ok for this. It is priced at $46.99. But keep in mind that rats get bored very easily even when there is 2. They need levels to climb and things that hang from there cage to keep them busy and even with all that sometimes they still get bored. A good cage for rats would be one that has several levels for them to climb up on. Petsmart does match competetors prices. If you can find the same cage on another website and its cheaper as long as you print that out as proof they will match that price. I just bought my girls the Midwest double level deluxe ferret nation cage. Petsmart was advertising it for $239. I found the same exact cage on ferret.com for $149.99. So I printed the ad out and took it in and with tax the cage only cost me $180. I saved like $80. But look on craigslist.com first. Alot of times you can find nice cages for alot cheaper than you would in the store. Hope I helped and happy hunting.

  2. I have two males.  I bought a wire cage that I thought they would love but quickly lost room and function with the addition of their toys, Water bottle, nesting box.  So I put my elderly hamster in it, because he needs an easier life right now, but the rats needed space.  So I decided to make a bin cage.  It was actually more fun and the rats are much happier in their new home.  I went to the bird section of our pet store and bought ladders, and various climbable toys and made levels and a mini obstacle course.  They have all that plus room to romp with each other.

  4. Make a bin cage out of a translucent storage bin and hardware cloth.  It can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish.  A bin costs $5-$13, depending, and the hardware cloth is pretty inexpensive; you may have some of the materials you need already.

  5. Ebay or Craigslist.

But you won't find a suitable one in a pet shop or even first hand for under $50.

I mean, that's £25 in my money, and that'll only buy you a Spelos DWARF HAMSTER cage in a pet shop!

And online it may get you a slightly better Syrian hamster cage, so don't hold your breath.

But there may be a free or cheap one on Craigslist if you're prepared to collect, and Ebay is always worth a look.

That link is WAY too small for even a full grown Syrian, let alone a full grown rat on its own!

It would also get chewed to pieces- don't trust rats with anything plastic.

  6. Law L is right. Craigslist, ebay, and similar sites are really your only shot at a suitable rat cage for that amount of money. $80 is about the minimum price you'd pay, and that would be for the bare minimum of space for 2 rats. Save up a bit more, $100 or more, and you'll be able to afford a quality rat cage. Something like this: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js... The cage that Gerbil Lover linked to is waaaay too small for one rat, let alone 2. They need at least 2 square feet per rat, minimum.

At craigslist people generally have good cages for much less than they bought them for, so that's probably your best bet. Although rats aren't the most common pet, so you may not have many to choose from. Good luck.
