George O Jones is right on. But allow about three hours to get to the N4 from Dublin Port. There is no easy way to beat the unbelievable gridlock that is 21st century Dublin from 7am to 1am 7 days a week. Average distance for an hour's driving in and around Dublin is about 5 or 6 miles! UNLESS you are lucky to disembark before 7oc in the morning and then you can cut that time to 45 minutes. Once clear of Dublin expect to do 45 miles every hour or even better on George's route if you are prepared to just keep driving.

1. Leave Dublin and follow signs to M50 heading to the West.

2. Take N4 exit to The West and go west toward Mullingar and Longford.

3. Stay on N4 until Longford where you switch to N5 toward Castlebar.

4. Stay on N5 until N26 in Swinford.

5. Take Swinford road to Foxford and continue to Ballina.

6. When you reach Ballina, continue straight, going through two traffic lights. Continue straight toward Killala.
