Question:

Need room in my panel for new circuit breaker

I want to add a sub panel and my main is full. Can I squeak out more room in my main by removing a 50/50 and a 20 amp duplex and replace them with a 20/50/50/20 quad (MP220250). I would continue to run the two 50's for the existing 220V stove and I would remove the clip and separate the 20s for the two existing 120v 20 amp circuits. That way, I should be able to get some more room- right?

  1. Wondering just how much more amperage load you're planning on adding to the main box, with the new sub panel.  Even though the odds are all the existing circuits wouldn't be in use at the same time to overload the system, you still need to be careful about how much more you add that has to run through the panel you have.   Your solution sounds a little complicated to me, why not just replace the double twenty with another 50, if that will suffice, run the wires for the sub panel and then install the two twenties in the new panel, along with whatever else you feel you need.   I'm thinking one double 50 would be less expensive than the quad you're considering.

  2. Are you talking about the panel in the house or outside? There should be room outside to add a circuit.
