  1. are you needing safty minimums, like when a hard hat is required?

Your going to have to look around on the osha website and possibly even take a seminar depending on the level of osha standards you need to meet.

    http://www.osha.gov/index.html

You should be able to find all of your answers there or find  contact info on that site to get your answers.

  2. There is a book that covers all of it free on google books:

And if you want it, the actual act:

  3. Here you will find a wealth of information for construction safety.including links to OSHA sites

  4. I am a safety manager for a multinational corporation.  Our source for all of our info is SafeTek USA.  We do pay them, as we use them for safety engineering, consulting, safety equipment, etc., but I know they offer a lot of free advice, and even have free consulting programs for smaller businesses.

We decided to use a professional safety company because OSHA offers the federal regulations required that employers follow, but too often the regulations are general and can be very confusing.  After about 6 months of interviewing we went with them because of their experience, track record, they offer a best price guarantee on safety equipment, and they are the largest safety provider in the country, which makes it easier for use because they can service all of our locations across the US.

They also have "Ask an Expert".  A free service for anyone requesting answers to specific or general questions.  I will put the link below.

I have been in the safety field as a safety director and manager for almost 20 years now, and I understand you frustration with trying to find what is actually required.  Through requests from corporations like ours, and also other clients, SafeTek USA has thankfully started a 2 year campaign to make the standards easier to understand by requesting Letters if Interpretation from OSHA (more info about that is on their website).

Keep in mind that OSHA has a lot of requirements for employees.  Every employer is required to have Safety Plans, job specific safety plans, if fall protection is required then the employer must have a fall rescue plan.  If you go into confined spaces, you must also have a plan for that, not to mention that all employees must be trained on the hazards of the job and how to recognize developing hazards.

Certain items in construction such as fall protection, confined spaces, scaffolding, trenching and excavation, and more, not only require job specific safety plans, but require a "competent person" and "qualified person" as defined by OSHA depending on the job.  Getting help and assistance from experts will make sure that all your employees stay safe, and will keep you from getting OSHA citations and fines. Best of all, it most likely wont cost you a dime!

    I hope this helps!
