Question:

Need some advice on treating my ankle.?

I've been training for a 13 mile run in September, it's my first major run, and honestly, my first run period (it's a life goal situation). I was running last night, and felt kinda a twinge, on my right ankle. Not the ankle itself but the side ball just feels tender when I walk. I don't want to miss any real time training, but I also don't want to push it and maybe really hurt it. Any advice on treatment, like wrapping, ice, things like that. Plus would it be advisable if I start using a bike till my ankle gets better? Thanks again for your help!

  1. With my solution you can run all you want with no risk.

First: Use R.I.C.E as much as you can, really rely on it before a long run.

and Seccond: Ankle Braces. They do magic. And theyre really cheap!

  2. We always used to put the affected leg in a trouser pocket for a few miles, and only run with the other one, until the pain wore off. After that it was OK for the rest of the run.

A friend used to try a variation of this. He would run with the leg that was not hurting and just walk with the one that was painful.

  3. You can use the R.I.C.E. method (rest, ice, compression and elevation) In college when we had sprained ankles we got the old ice bucket out and stuck our foot in there, it works wonders, doesn't feel that good for the first few minutes but once the foot becomes numb it's ok. I wouldn't keep in the ice more than 15-20 mins though.
