Question:

Need some apparatus to hold a keg upright and float?

So a large group of friends and I are taking a 15 mile canoe trip in late June. We did it last year and it was a blast just sort of floating down a river and drinking. We had people designated to drop us off at a point, and we had people designated to wait at our pick up point. This year, one of my friends got the idea to bring a keg along. We were hoping to find a SOLID small inflatable boat type deal to hold the keg. We would need the keg to stand upright obviously, and the small inflatable raft deal needs to be heavy duty enough to support the weight of the keg. We could just put the keg in one of the 9 canoes that will be going, but it would be a lot more fun to have a designated 'drink canoe/boat.' Any ideas? All the inflatable rafts I have seen look like they would tip over or be unstable with a keg in them.

  1. sounds like a good trip what about a rubber truck inertube

    enjoy your trip

  2. Hey! First things first.... Moving kegs = buckets of foam.  I'd stick with smaller containers.

Second ... a full keg is HEAVY, and it won't float.  Seriously.  So... if it's in a canoe, you'll be popping a wheely or an end-o.  It'd be hard to control that canoe in any case.

In a raft, you'll probably taco the raft.

Better bet is to go with the little 1/8 barrels.  Lighter, easier to handle.  Plus, instead of a steel tap running straight out the top, you can go with the plastic tube style.  AND, it's small enough you can keep it iced down.

You know the big deep plastic tubs at Walmart or Target that they're selling like crazy for putting drinks in for backyard parties?  Buy one, take it to a truck / tractor tire company, and buy a tractor innertube that it will fit in the middle of.  So, you blow the tire up around the plastic tub.  Add Ice and the 1/8 barrel, and tow it behind the boats.  It'll make for a long, slow float.

Be careful, don't get too nutzo, and have fun!

  3. Not such a good idea i think. The keg is going to be alot taller than anyone sitting down in a canoe and therefore hard to pump the tap. But if you were to do it you could maybe build a small pontoon type boat so that the keg rests partway in the water. It would not be that difficult to build either.
