After being soaked in water, a limp lettuce becomes crisp. Why did that happen? (i personally think that it may concern the process of osmosis, but am not sure???)

  1. It is osmosis. Once the water has penetrated the membrane, it is held inside making it firm.

Drop some salt on there and watch it go limp again.

  2. You already correctly answered your question so i have a interesting bit of information that relates to the question.

Grocery stores use this to their advantage.

They soak all the lettuce in cold water before putting it on the shelf to make it look healthier and crunchier.  It also makes the lettuce look greener.

This is also the reason most grocery stores have some system to water the vegetables.

Before you buy compare.   They're tricky >.>

Not a bad idea to do the same at home.  Limp and rubbery lettuce is aweful.  I'd reccomend using it before it gets like that though...

  3. osmosis it basic science look it up in a grade 7 or 8 and maybe 9 science textbook the teachers all ways show a carrot or something for a better explanation

Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane, from a solution of low solute concentration (high water potential) to a solution with high solute concentration (low water potential), up a solute concentration gradient. It is a physical process in which a solvent moves, without input of energy, across a semi-permeable membrane (permeable to the solvent, but not the solute) separating two solutions of different concentrations.[1] Osmosis releases energy, and can be made to do work, as when a growing tree-root splits a stone.
