Explain why biodiversity is important to continued evolution..

  1. Biodiversity is the variation of life forms in an ecosystem. Biodiversity is important for evolution in it provides the raw material on which evolution can act. The process of evolution relies on individuals as well as species differing, slightly or significantly, from one another. Without this diversity, natural selection cannot put pressure on the population or on the species in a way that leads to novel changes which, in turn, lead to further biodiversity.


  2. Biodiversity is a term that describes the variety of species living on this planet. By mating (and sometimes mutating), species evolve.

    Think about different breeds of dogs. You can "create" a new dog by having two different breeds mate - and maybe, just maybe, that sort of "new" breed of dog is faster, quicker, smarter etc. than any of his parents. Now think about this process not happening with you "setting" dogs up for a date, but happening coincidentally. There you go, evolution. ;)
