Hi, I really don't know a huge amount about Football (American) and I'm going to watch the first game of the season, Giants vs Redskins on September 4th. Is there any basic info you clever people could give me to make it easier for me to understand, i.e scoring, what each position does?

Thanks so much, Nat :)

  1. You have four downs (or trys) to go 10 yards.  If you go ten yards within those four downs, you get four more downs to go another ten yards.  If, on the fourth down, you have too far to go to get your ten yards, you can either punt the ball to the other team, at which time they then get four downs to go 10 yards, or you can try to kick the ball through the uprights of the goal posts.  If you do, you get 3 points.  If you pass or run the ball over the goal line, you get 6 points and you can kick the ball over the goal post on the next play for one other point (extra point) or you can try to run or pass the ball into the end zone for 2 points.  I hope you enjoy your first football game.

  2. A team has four downs, or plays, to make a first down. If they can get 10 yards from the spot of the original line of scrimmage, which is where the ball is, they get a new set of downs. Each team"s offense tries to drive down the field by running or passing while the defense tries to stop the driving. After every score the team that scores kicks off to the opponents. Each half also opens up with a kickoff. If a team has fourth down and they are far from the end zone, or in their own territory, they will usually punt it away, unless they are losing late in the game, or just want to take a chance. If a team does not get a new set of downs on 4th down the other team gets the ball at the same spot, except they go the opposite direction. If a team is close enough to the endzone on 4th down they may try a field goal. If the kicker kicks it through the goal posts his team gets 3 points. They're are four quarters in the game, each of which lasts 15 minutes. At the end of the fourth quarter the highest scorer wins. If the score is tied then there will be a sudden death overtime. That means the first team to score wins. There is a coin toss at the beginning of overtime and the winner picks whether to kick or receive the kick. Play then continues as normal until someone scores to end the game.

  3. Wave a black and gold terrible towel and say "GO STEELERS"!

  4. Touchdowns are 6 points

    Extra points are 1 point

    Field goals are 3 points

A safety is 2 points. Your chances of seeing a safety are very small.

  8. ok there is four set of downs on the fourth down they usually punt or kick the ball when u punt the other team gets the ball when u kick it u try to make it through the goal poles there is four quarters in a game each quarter is fifteen minutes long and a half time will there is an offense and defense the offense trey's to get it to the other side if they do make what u call a touch down they get 6 points plus a chance to kick a Field goal witch is worth one point so if they make it it will be a score of seven if not its six ect ect  the hard parts is the fowls penalties

  9. search us football on wikipedia it got all the info u need to get u started on rules and points :)

  10. Cheer for the Redskins.

  11. First rule..The Dallas Cowboys are the most superior franchise in history.

Second rule, like rugby....ya gotta get this ball down there...they gotta get it down the other way. It's just more sophisticated....much like the Cowboys. So...just remember...these games don't really count. Only how well they fare against the Cowboys matters. Hope this helps. Enjoy the game.

  12. Football is a real complicated sport. Youre not goin to know whats goin on for at least 8 weeks. But there are two teams for each, well...team. Example...the New York Giants are a team, but they have an offense and a defense....which consists of different players and different types of skills.

Offense--- Attempts to get the football into the endzone to score.

Defense---Atempts to get the ball from the offense so their own could score.

Offense contains a Quarterback, Running Back, Wide Recievers, Tight End, Offensive Guards, Tackles, and Center. ( Tackles are on the outside of the O-line and the Guards are on the inside ) No more than 11 players can be on the field for a play. The offense must consist of one qb and five o-linemen. So, the rest of the five positions get mixed with tight ends, running backs, and wide recievers...depending on the situation. An offense can either run the ball or pass the ball. If the player goes out of bounds or throws an incomplete pass...the clock stops. If a player drops the ball before the knee is down...then its a fumble. A fumble can be recovered by either side team. If the quarterback throws to the other team, then its in interception and the other team gets the ball.

I could go on for hours....but those are the basics to football.

CHEER FOR THE SUPER BOWL GIANTS!!!!

  13. Support the Giants over the Redskins every time, but just pick the city that you would most like to visit (in case you ever get the chance).

As for the rules, most people have summed them up.

Unlike rugby or football, the game is not continuous.  Once a player is tackled, the game stops while everyone resets to go again.

The team with the ball will either try and throw the ball or run with it.  Throwing normally gets the ball further but is more risky.

The other posters have explained about getting 10 yards, when teams kick the ball, etc.

Sky have an option on the red button to see the rules if you have any questions during the game.

It should be a good game - have fun.
