Question:

Need some help with a 1973 Evinrude 50 hp motor?

Can't get the motor to idle. Guess it needs a little adjusting. Also, the motor will not crank when the warm up lever is lifted. Once I put it down, it will turn over. If I lift it while I'm cranking it, or lift it when it is started, the motor dies. What do I do?

  1. There is a neutral safety switch inside the box it's out of adjustment ot defective>Carbs need cleaning>Or check for a wire that's rubbing agains the warm up control shorting out>

  2. been like this since you got it?

what recent maintenance has been done?

reason for asking is, it sounds like a carb job with an incomplete link & sync and maybe an incorrect slow speed mixture setting.

The warm-up lever mostly just advances the spark -- it only opens the throttles maybe 20-25% -- so the linkage is messed up in there.  I'm surprised you can get it to start when cold without the warm-up lever lifted full up.

It probably isn't going to be that hard to fix, but I need more info.  Starting with, take off the cowl and observe the movement on the starboard side of the motor while somebody lifts the hi-idle lever.  Describe what happens.  The timer base should move most (maybe all) the way to its stop, and the throttle cam should contact the roller and move it a little bit.

This is a mid-80's 3-cylinder, but it'll help you identify the cam, timer base and roller:

neutral safety switch keeps the starter from spinning but doesn't kill the motor after it's running.

  3. You should check through the owners (repair) manual. Download it here:

  4. I agree it's the neutral start switch, but some engines had them under the coweling, so look both places.  It should make the engine start easier.  Disconnect the throttle cable at the engine, then re adjust everything before hookig it back up.  Good luck!
