Need some help with boat motor?

We finally got our boat out on the water today after rebuilding the motor. We inherited a boat to put it on and went out. The motor would wind out but it just wouldn't seem to plane.. I don't know how better to word it. The V that it made in the back from the water looked like the propellers wouldn't be in the water. We looked at it after taking it out of the water and the propellor is higher than the bottom of the boat by like 2 inches.. would that be the problem?

I got a 94 mercury 40 hp motor. the oil mixes with the gas on its on. i was wondering if i could unhook the oil tank and put my oil in with my gas in the gas tank.
