I have an 89 GMC S-15 pick up with a regular cab so its tight inside. i was looking at getting the Sony Xplod 10" subwoofer. I was looking at some pics and realized that the reason they are so deep is because of the plastic molding, now my question is is it possible to take off the plastic molding on the back side of the sub and how much depth will the sub loose without it. I'm a noob with subs, but i have a friend who is an expert, so i can hook it up myself, i just need to know if i can get it to fit. thanx for any answers

  1. If it was me, I'd go Kicker. My truck is a standard cab full size Dodge, and I tore out the center seat to make room for a 3.5 cubic foot enclosure (SPL style)with a Kicker L7 12" driven by a Kicker ZX750.1(soon to be a Kicker 12" Solo X and a Kicker ZX2500.1...what? Can't hear you!!!) It looks insane towering inside the cab, but the sound is worth the discomfort. Bass is all about moving air. If you go with a small sealed enclosure, you will get tight, accurate bass. If you go ported and large, you will get boom and depth . Don't punish yourself by going with Explod components. They may be cheap, but the price is definitely indicative of the performance you will acheive.  Kicker L7s rock..even 10's. If you must conform to the spacial limits....go sealed with as much air as allowed for the sub (tech manuals) or ported with as little as allowed. These questions are assisted greatly when we know what type of music you listen to.....Cash is what determines the sound you get. Go cheap, sound like c**p....spend a bit more....tick the neighbors off and impress the homies.

  2. Think about maybe getting a pioneer shallow mount sub.

Follow the link to look at what they offer.

  3. I would go with a shallow sub, there are alot to choose from, go to onlinecarstereo.com and check out all of their subs, they have tons of subs at good prices, and you get free shipping.

  4. You really wouldn't lose much depth. Your best bet would be to get a shallow mount sub. JL audio, Kicker, Hifonics and MTX all make them at various price ranges.
