Need some ideas for an art assignment?

My art assignment is to construct a low relief still life assemblage, using preferably found objects. My ideas so far are to do something which symbolize my grandparents who I lived with all my life until they passed away - I was very attached to them both so I would like my assemblage to be symbolic of them.

So anyway, so far what i've come up with is to use a large piece of wood and carve the design of my grandfather's wooden walking stick into it, and then paint and varnish it. I want to use a string of prayer beads, similar to the ones my grandmother had and hang it on the carved wood. Other than that, I'm kind of stuck for ideas =S I want it to reflect the time i spent with them and how much they meant to me,but i don't know how to do that as still life.

Ideas will be greatly appreciated =D

  1. how bout something that symbolizes your love for them (hate to do hearts but that's all I can think of) or if your gma baked -a recipe card of hers, or a mixing spoon, or if she gardened or liked flowers... flowers, or photos of them, or you with them (you could even make frames to go around their photos).

If either of them had hobbies.. something related to the hobby (if either of them took pictures or liked photography you could use film pulled out of the film reel).

or where they lived or came from- maybe part of a map showing their town, or country they came from (if different then the u.s.) - or a google earth print of their house from above, or pets they had.

sounds like a nice project that you could keep around to remind you of them.

  2. If you are using a big piece of wood you could look into wood burning too... It gives it a very nastolgic look.... If it's about your grandparents, I would put in anything that reminds you of them.. down to candy they use to give you, how they impacted your life as an artist supporting you.. maybe giving you those first crayola crayons ya know. Sometimes all those little things bring the story together. After all you are telling the story now. Other example... books you use to read, pictures you took.. (polaroids might be kinda cool if you have any of those), maybe a game you use to play, music, movies/actors/cartoons..... When you are out and about, what do you see in life that reminds you of them. Those are the things that mean something to you. Good luck! Sounds fun!
