Need some new aquarium help?

I just set up a ten gallon tank. It's freshwater, and I dropped in two plant bulbs. I have a huge cave thing for fish to hide in, as well as a smaller cave thingy. Now what? I'm not sure if I need a heater or not, or even what fish to get. Also, I've read up on cycling tanks, but I'm still confused. I know you should only put a few fish in at a time. But I'm at a lose from there. Some help please? I've considered certain fish and then I hit a wall. I need some serious advice!

  1. you cant put many fish in a ten gallon successfully, but if you tank care of it and stay on the ball you can have 8 small of 3 large.

    i personally recommend the dragonfish

  2. u want to cycle your tank with NO fish in it for a month! get a product called cycle it has beneficial bacteria that the tank needs to get its ph and chemicals in order. the best fish to start out in it would be a danio, they are very hardy fish and will cycle your tank faster for you. i would get a ziploc baggie fill it with some water from ur tank after having it been cycled for a month to petco and have them test ur water. depending on ur Ph of the tank that will determine what fish u can put in or if the tanks ph is too high or too low as well as alkalinity, and other important factors. if u decide to put a heater in it which is always a good idea that way later u can add other tropical fish to ur tank and ur not limited to just gold fish or ur betta. if u need any other help feel free to email me zacatecana722@yahoo.com i would love to help u. good luck!

  3. Slender Filefish (Monacanthus tuckeri). 3.9 inches. One of the best aquarium filefishes, this fish remains small and acclimates readily to the home aquarium. It is one of the better-suited species for the reef tank,

  4. sounds good so far,,

    a heater yes

Cycling is when you clean the tank and do a partial water change. You have a 10 so you would take out a 1/3 of the water so not to upset the good bacteria..

They say 1 fish per gallon. Don't get any algea eaters or catfish or any bottom feeders cause your tank is so new there is no debri to eat, and they will not survive in a clean tank.

So go get 10 ""community fish"" they stay small.  Get some neons, guppies, platys and swordtails.

Mollies get ick easy. Get fish that won't out grow your tank.

Oscars, Angels will out grow a 10 gal.fast

email me for any more help..have fun!!

  5. Unless your are getting a goldfish you will need a heater and a thermometer to regulate the correct heat for your fish.

Do you have a filter running? Cycling pretty much means giving the tank about 2 weeks to set up a bacteria colony before adding fish so they wont die. Go to your pet store and buy bacteria supplements and it will help the growth of your bacteria.

After two weeks you are ready to add fish. Add about 2 or 3 at a time until it is full...And remmeebr to research the fish your are considering buying before purchasing them. And amke sure you do not overstock your tank or you will have deaths to your fish

    Fish I suggest:

-Live bearers-Platies, guppies, mollies, or sword tails

-Small Schooling-any kind of tetra(neons are my fav.), glofish, danios, rasboras

-Center Piece-DWARF Gourami-make sure you get a DWARF because they are peaceful, the larger gouramis like kissing gouramis are aggressive and will attack your other fish :(

-"clean up fish"-Cory cats(Eat food that falls to the bottom), Pleco(Will suck on the tank to get algae out, but make sure you get the right kind of pleco because some grow to be VERY big and need a larger tank

Hope I helped :D good luck

  6. Just hunting down resources that can explain better than me...

You probably wont need a heater... but that depends on the fish. I'd start with something simple & hearty... goldfish... and get a plecostomus (alge eaters) to help keep the tank clean.

Don't spend a LOT of money on the first fish... a lot of times the first fish in a brand NEW aqarium die because its all so clean.

One male betta would be fine.... bettas and goldfish get along okay, but like different temp water... so one fish would either be cold or hot all the time.

bettas DO get along w/ other fish... they have to be about the same size as a betta & you're right, no flowing fins because bettas are agressive.

  7. It really depends on the fish as to if you need a filter or not.  If you want goldfish, they are really strong, you can practically throw them into any water and they will survive....neons and tetra are ok at room temp as well...I believe

Angel fish are nice but delicate....I had one live for about 5 years, but I did have a heater.

First decide the type of fish, and go from there.  Find a fish store (like Big Al`s) Somewhere that really knows their fish...and they will get you going no problem.

You can get fish at virtually any pet store (even Walmart *rolls her eyes*) but I would go where they know!

  8. now here from what you have said i would say maybe a hood light umm  air pump  now you should go to petstore and ask what fish are good glo fish are pretty awsome yea good luck

and do you have a filter you really did say what all you have sorry for pointing that out  also with glo fish you need a heater and thermorther and hood light to help keep heating tank
