I will start by saying I know absolutely nothing about golf :-) My boyfriend however is recently obsessed with it and really wants golf clubs for his b-day, we went to Dunham's the other day and he got the "big bertha" and needs the irons set to go w/ it, the set he likes is graphite and was on sale for $599.00 I think it was last years model. Anyway I went on Ebay and founnd the same sets for under $400, but they are lightly used. Does normal wear and tear on the clubs affect his playing ability, or is it worth it to save a couple hundred bucks?

  1. The down side of buying off EBay is that isf something happens to the clubs in the next few months you have no way of returning them or at least getting some sort of refund. Go to a legit store and buy them for him when he is with you. I know it soundds weird but guaranteed he will love them even more if he gets to choose the clubs he wants. Tell not to buy graphite irons, he will get better feel with steel shafts. If he argues tell him no one on tour uses graphite shafts on their irons.

  2. My advice is go to golfsmith or local golf shop and buy a pre-owned iron set there you can see the irons and check before you buy it...im sure there's a big bertha iron set that's pre-owned and the price is also the same on ebay, i dont recommend buying golf clubs on ebay or craigslist due to alot of things these days can be easily counterfeited unless you go to a legit golf site that sell 100% authentic golf clubs, as for the wear and tear on clubs it depends and if your BF is just starting to play and learn is doesnt affect that much as long as the club is in good condition. I hope this helps :)

  3. First, it's not necessary to get the "accompanying" set of irons to go with the driver, but that's not what you asked.  Normal wear and tear won't affect the playability.  When it comes to golf, it's always worth it to save a couple of hundred bucks, especially in this day's economy.

  4. I f you want them new you can get them at International Golf Discount store in woodland hills CA, I believe they ship anywhere in the USA for less then $45, I got the new 2008 Big Bertha set 3-PW For $490.00 and a buddy of mine got the 2008 Taylor Made Burner set for $540.00 These are brand new never  used.

  5. Normal wear and tear should not affect the quality of the clubs whatsoever and its actually a good idea to find good used clubs and save money. The only thing I would caution you about when buying off of Ebay or anywhere, make sure there is a return policy in case the condition is not as described.

  6. Normal wear and tear will not affect playability.......Guess it depends on if he has his heart set on "New out of the box" or not

  7. clubs will get worn so fast you might as well get used clubs. and i DONT recommend callaway irons. get some hogans.

  8. No it should not affect them whatsoever other than there may likely be scratches on the club face and shafts.

  9. I would be very hesitant to use ebay or craiglist for golf clubs; many of them are fakes (plus, they'll have zero warranty).

Callaway has a pre-owned website (google it) that you can buy off of (I'm not touting them for those wondering- I don't use Callaway clubs); I haven't a clue as to price, but at least then you'd have some kind of warranty protection, plus then you're buying clubs that are legit.

You should be able to find a "lightly used" set of Big Berthas for your boyfriend through them, or perhaps a new set of last year's (or even two years ago).

Good luck; I'm sure he'll love whatever you get.
