I need some tips for my trip (Drive) from toronto to new york. It is first time I go to US, I dont know well the roads, so if somebody know useful advice let me know, I will appreciate.

We are 2 person, me and my wife will drive by my own car.

If some nice family have a plan to drive to new york, for trip we can join together .

  1. It is a very easy drive. I suggest crossing over the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge rather than the Peace Bridge - it is generally faster. To get to the Queenston-Lewiston, take the QEW to 405. Once you cross the border, take I-190 south. Follow the signs to the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90). Take the Thruway east and it will take you all the way to New York.

There are numerous rest stops along the way. Make sure you have some US dollars to pay the tolls (I believe it's around $20-25 one-way).

  2. On each of my recent driving trips to Toronto from the US, I used MapQuest to print directionmaps from specific addresses I was coming from and going to.  In all but one instance, the maps were spot on.  In the one instance they were wrong, there was enough info from what I should have been encountering to know that the direction was incorrect and correct it before I got very far away from where I wanted to be.

With signs, exit numbers and mileages down to the hundredth of a mile, MapQuest is a good, free service for road travelers of all distances.

  3. Honestly what I would suggest is purchasing a cheap GPS for the drive and then return it when you get home. I recommend the Garmin Nuvi 250 , it should cost around $200 https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=...

It is so simple to use you dont even need to look at the instructions. Getting to NYC is easy but driving in the city when you dont know the routes is a nightmare. I guarantee you will thank me and so will your relationship with your wife.

Trust me when I say you NEED A GPS.

Get it from best buy or future shop, they have great return policies. I bet you keep it because you love it so much. Have fun!

Now if you dont want to "rent" a GPS, than use google maps. They give you detailed directions down to the amount of meters before you turn.

  4. let me assure you, it's not a difficult drive. go to google maps and get directions they'll be perfect (get them the night before you leave cause they adjust for traffic and detours.).  Don't do mapquest.  I've gotten lost on their directions soooo many times i can't keep count.

Let's see, make some sandwiches bring water, pop, juice, snacks etc so you don't have to get robbed by the prices of the roadside eateries.  Stop every 2 or 3 hours for a mintue just to stretch and walk for a second.  Try switching up who's driving at this point as well.  Bring some good music (driving so far you'll have a h**l of a time trying to keep up with what radio stations play the music you like).

Have fun! take your time, enjoy the scenery it's a beautiful drive through pennsylvania.
