Would a small movie theater showing nothing but martial arts movies; documentaries; videos; history; fights; and demonstrations make money?

  1. Darn good question.  I think it really depends on the area, we have a theater in our local Chinese/Vietnamese town that has been in existence for years.  The idea of arraigning local school demos is not a bad idea, but there has to be some revenue product associated with it, either through selling tickets to demos which may not fly, or by making a deal with local schools for some kind of promotional deal.

You would have to tie in some kind of promotional deal or be in a heavily ethnic neighborhood.  Personally the idea bores me to tears, but there are many who would be interested in this kind of thing, but again, there has to be a hook, maybe a couple of classes a week, hooked to an admission price.  Charge $10 a ticket and give the customers 1 hour of free tai chi chuan...something on that order.

  2. Not unless you live in Bangkok, Thailand.

What would work is a little sports tavern next to a college campus that was mma specific (you might need a lot of security, though).  If you had UFC, EliteXC, King of the Cage, or other programs on a giant High Def screen for people to watch while they drink beer (keep liquor out) and eat pizza and hot wings you could potentially make a lot of money.

I would start the business out as a Saturday and Sunday open only business, though, and then go from there.  Don't dump a bunch of money into it, either.  One of the rules of small business is not to bury yourself in overhead.

  3. depends on the amount of ma in the area who enjoy watching ma stuff ,I certainly would go :)***

  4. It would definitely make money from people who watch those old chop-sockey kung fu movies.

  5. If I say yes, will you open one near me?

As much as I'd like to see it, I would think it wouldn't make money

I'm into all that stuff as much as anyone else, but I know even I would get tired of it

Of course, opening up a theater with a weekly, biweekly, or monthly "fight night" thing, that caters to that kind of entertainment, might work in the right area

  6. Most likely no. It's unfortunate because if it were in my area I would watch everything it had to offer. Yes, even the real crappy kung fu movies, and Bruce Lee's game of death where they had a guy wearing a mask of his face through the whole thing.

There's just not enough demand, in the overall population for that type of genre specific theater. You might be able to do something like a ripley's believe it or not and in the right setting keep your head above water. The big issue is just public appeal and setting.

If you're going for it, good luck!!

  7. Maybe in a town like San Francisco.  Only about 1% of the population is even interested in martial arts.  If you had a way to move seats around to use as a venue for actual fights and competitions you might do okay.  Add a martial arts supply store, too.

And get some good security otherwise the toughest fighters will take over your place.

  8. I have seen a few such theaters in big cities but not small towns. The bigger the city, the more fans one has for any subject.

  9. I think it would.  It will be cheaper to see a fight in the movies than it would be to by a ticket for the event. Jackie Chen  and Jet Li are a big box office names and can help you make money..  But remember that a lot of movie houses have gone out of business because of pay TV and the internet.
