From Chicago Union Station to Milwaukee the fare is $21 and Amtrak runs seven daily trains called Hiawatha Service between 6 am and 8 pm with service about every two hours. It's a one hour 44 minute trip.  

Greyhound makes the same trip ten times every day for $13.50.  

From Crete you can ride  PACE Route 358 from Chicago Heights (Steger at State) to the South Shore Railroad and take that to downtown CHI - that'll add about $6.00 to the cost but save you or your family the drive to downtown.

I've used both bus and train - train's got more room and snacks onboard but both are fine for a short trip like CHI-MKE.
