  1. Toyota

  2. Go for a Japanese car they are more reliable. Plus I would try to get a car with a Gas Convertion kit already fitted as it would work out alot better then Petrol or Diesel

  3. As you mention your budget in Pounds I presume you are in UK.

With your budget - and with respect to your other responders - I would NOT buy a Japanese car!!!  -  yes they are reliable but if you need to replace things like sensors, brake servos etc the costs can be very high and the so called 'universal' after market parts will not usually fit.

Go for what has been probably the best overall value pound for pound s/h car there has ever been on the UK market place the Peugeot 406 hdi.  They run for ever [well 300k anyway], they do not rust, parts easily available, economical (my 2002 model with the 110bhp hdi engine has averaged 46.8mpg over the 28k i have done in it.  This model is hugely popular with mini cabbers.  It will never leave you stranded but what you will get is the odd minor niggle - a common one being the air bag warning light coming on and this is usually the wiring connector for the side bag in the drivers seat, a wiggle normally cures it for a while. Another is the direction indicator arm often does not self centre or goes over centre once the mileage gets to about the 100k.  They never fetch remotely what they are actually worth as a working vehicle. Your budget will buy you a good one.

  4. Yup, japanese cars!

I think Honda seem to be the best, but generally I think the toyota cars seem to be the best in fuel economy..

I put a h**l of a lot of money (well, £5,500 is a lot at 19 years of age!!) into a 2002 VW Polo... from a respectable VW Dealership, and its an utter pile of s**t!! Worst car I've ever owned! DO NOT TOUCH EM!!! (Says something about Volkswagen of these days!!) - I sell parts for the classic old VW's, theyre much better than these new scrapheaps!!)

I'm going to change probably to a japanese car when I next change cars!!

  7. Just call a taxi company and ask them which cars they use and how much trouble they have with them! You see a lot of big toyotas and hondas with private hire plates on so I'm assuming they must be fairly good?
