I have an Olevia HDTV. I opted for the version that didn't have a built in HD-tuner, or whatever it's called. so it didn't have a coaxial input on it. I have basic cable. I'm not really into it, it's nice to have around. but I don't have cable boxes. so, I can't run it into my HDTV without some kind of adapter. went to Radioshack and they said I need a tuner or converter. well, I bought a converter, which is designed for antennas, and it doesn't work at all. is a tuner what I need?

  1. You need a cable box or perhaps a HD Tuner.

The coax carries ALL channels and sound so the cable box will let you tune to a single station.  Your TV does NOT have a tuner so you need an external box that lets you channel change and converts the output to HDMI.

You can get the cable box for $5/month (and it can be a HD-PVR which is highly recommended). Or go to BestBuy and get a HDTV tuner and try plugging your cable into the antenna input.  This SOMETIMES works and sometimes does not so keep your receipt.

  2. Your cable company apparently does not carry digital transmissions over their basic cable.  That might change in Feb 2009.  At that point your converter may work.

It is surprising to me that the TV has no tuner at all.  Most sets sold as "HDTV Ready" had no HDTV tuners, but they did have analog tuners.  I suggest you contact Olevia and make sure there is no way for your set to receive analog signals.
