i need to cry for a part in the school play, and I have tried all sorts of tricks, but nothing works! I actually haven't cried in years, and i just can't do it. The only thing that can make me tear up is to pluck my eyebrows, but I can't turn away to pluck a hair from my face, and no other body parts are that sensitive. does anyone have any ideas?

  1. "Tear stick" does the job. It's exactly what we use on stage to get the tears a-flowing when you don't really feel like delving deep into tragic memories of your past

  2. My first suggestion would be to, yes, think of something sad. This rarely works for me but it's still worth a shot. Second, try making the sounds of when you cry. I don't mean to wail but start breathing sharply, and constricting your throat like you have a knot in your throat. When you speak, make it sound like you can barely get the words out, like when you really cry. Making the body behave as if you're going to cry actually does make you cry.  Just don't go over the top with it so that it doesn't seem like you're trying too hard.

    good luck!

  3. When I was in drama class, they told us to think of something sad.

  4. think of something sad that has made you cry a lot and put yourself emotionally in the shoes of the role you're playing

  5. I have a couple of suggestions that have worked for me in the past:

    1) The ever popular think of something sad...this hasn't really ever worked for me but if you have something you know will make you cry go for it.

    2) open your eyes wide and don't blink until your eyes are burning with tears

    3) pretend the people in the audience are booing you and falling asleep

    4) pinch yourself REALLY REALLY hard!!!

The second one always works and it's easy to do onstage because all you have to do is not blink up until the part where you have to cry. I would practice the timing because you don't want tears to fall too early or too late and you don't want to have your eyes all glassy early on.

    Good Luck!!

  6. Don't blink. Your eyes will water. Or chop up an onion &rub some of it on your finger &under your eyes &the gases from the onion will make you tear up depending on how much you put on.

  7. You have already accomplished the hardest part...not crying for years.

Now, when you are about to go on stage, think of all those times that you should have cried but you instead bottled up those emotions.  You remember them:

    - When your Dad called you good-for-nothing and worthless

    - When that guy you liked at school said you were a s**t

    - When your ex best-friend started going out with a guy you liked

    - When your teacher said you were dumb in front of the class

    - When you heard that Heath Ledger died

I myself haven't cried for 20 years so if I ever get a part where I need to cry I will think of

    - When I only got a B+ on my term paper

    - When Alf was canceled

    - When I made the wrong play in a Magic: The Gathering tournament

    - When I found out that Mr. Rogers really couldn't see me through the TV

    - The fact that infants always cry whenever I approach

You'll need to excuse me.  I am going off to cry now.
