Question:

Need to cut a deadbolt?

There's a deadbolt on my garage door. I lost the keys a while ago. Will bolt cutters cut the deadbolt?

The deadbolt is a Master's dead bolt.

It's one of those deadbolts that have the lock permanently attached to the bolt itself on the bottom part. Is there a way to cut the wood around where the deadbolt slides into instead? I don't know how to get that deadbolt off and I need to get back in there. The keys are GONE and I don't know how else to remove the bolts without taking off the whole garage door!

  1. i have to say I've never seen a setup like that, HOWEVER if you look on the bottom of the lock there should be a number.

get that number then call the number for MASTER LOCK and see what they might suggest to you, including sending you a key for that numbered lock. you may have to send them proof of purchase for that lock and a check to cover the expenses.    when you bought the lock, your always given two sets of keys, maybe the other key is with your receipt or container.

    good luck to ya

  2. buy a small pair of bolt cutters

  3. Rent a reciprocating saw with metal cutting blade. Then saw between the tiny space you have between the door and the frame. Take your time not to overheat the blade. Cut where you think where the deadbolt is. Minor damage which can be easily repaired.

  4. Cheapest way is as adam/penny advised, email master's and explain your situation. It's got to be cheaper than replacing it.

I dont think bolt cutters would make a real dent in that lock by the look of it,  but if i was going to tackle it i would grind the U shaped piece of metal that the bolt slides into that looks like the weakest point.

  5. A small grinder with a cutoff wheel could be used to either cut the lock or split the steel holding the deadbolt . If you have a good bolt / chain cutter  cut the pin on the lock . as per your picture cut the one on the right not the left . grinder will do as well.

  6. From the picture i see screws holding part of the hasp in place. If they are accessable  remove them and the hasp should swing open.   If not take a  a hammer.  center a chisel in center of top of lock and pound away on the chisel  forcing the lock down & open. this is how  we open  padlocks in work  that employees have lost keys to.

  7. It seems like you could use bolt cutters to cut the padlock and then just unscrew the thing with the door open. Is this untrue?

  8. I had to do this a few months ago.  I first tried to cut it with a hand saw with a metal blade, this would have taken hours.  After that I used a reciprocating saw and it did the job in like 1 minute.  You probably need a bit of a gap to work with though.
