Need to find a place where i can buy a sim card for a iphone?

my roommate gave it to me.It is a used 1st generation iphone that i use for checking my email and play music,but i want to know how i can get to use the phone without going to pay alot to get it turned on for service.

You can't put in or take out a sim card from an iPhone unless you open it up which might mess it up. There will already be a sim card in the phone because it is a GSM (AT&T) phone.
