I am using our old scrabble board and tiles and putting them in a wood serving tray with clear sealer over them and serve food and drinks when we play games but right now the game board is to big around the edges and I need a way to make it fit by 1/8 to 1/2 an inch but have not come up with a way to make the scrabble board look used but still good. I was thinking sandpapper but am not sure if this would be a wast of time. I am not a big craft person so I need help. Thanks

  1. We have a scrabble board that we have kept for at least 10 years and it has been played on quite extensively.   There are no visible marks / scratchs on it.  The reason I mention this is that I'm not sure if making it 'look used' is necessary as they don't normally wear that way.

Don't get me wrong here, I think your idea is supper cool and understand the look your going for.   I'm just think that the 'worn look' is probably 'not the norm' and that a good clean board underneith may be more appealing.

Now.. for the edges.  Shaving a bit off is probably best done with a 'box cutter'.  I would suggest you invest about $5 in a strong metal cutter sold at Lowes and Home Depot for sheet rock work.  These cutters use standard cutting blades and designed for a good grip an a straight cut.   Use this to cut your edges down.   Draw a line where you want to make the cut first.

I'm pretty sure you are not going to get a clean straight cut so I would also suggest you find something to 'trim out' the edges with.  This could be a thin piece of wood or even some macreme' (sp?) twine glued around the edges.  This will cover the little imperfections in the cuts.

Good luck with the great idea!

  2. Use an Xacto knife.

    They work really well.

After wards it might look a lot better if you take sandpaper and smooth the edges around so it'll fit better.

This is a really cool idea, by the way.

  3. why would you bother.

  4. take a razor knife, like one used for cutting boxes and cut the edges.
