My great grandmother told us that she was born in nov. of 1913, in idabel, oklahoma (mcCurtain co.) Her name was lena margaretta ingraham. We have all her information, as well as her mothers (vera pearl st.john, later hall, b.feb 1, mcminnville,tenn.1893,d. july 7 1983 in ft.woeth, tarrent county,tex.). The problem is lena's father, Charlie E. Ingraham (ingram, ingrum,)

She told us he was a cherokee indian born in alabama in 1864 and married to vera in 1911 in murchisin tex. (rusk co.) He died in 1914 in haywood (or idabel) oklahoma.

She also told us that they did not sign the dawls rolls, but left on their own instead. Most of her info came from her mother, b/c she was only one when he died.

A fire burned lena's birth certificate and possibly his death certificate too. He was married before he married vera.

He had a brother named william, and they called themselves dutch black instead of cherokee after they left.

I cannot seem to find ANY info on him at all.

  1. In your question, you noted that they were married in Rusk County, Texas; however, Murchison is actually in Henderson County, Texas.  You might want to center a search around Henderson County to see if you can turn anything up there.

Getting a death certificate for Charlie may be difficult.  Oklahoma began filing birth and death records in October of 1908. It was not mandatory, however, that these records be filed until 1917. Because birth and death records were not required in years past as they are today for identification or settlement of claims in matters of death, the filing process in many years prior to 1940 are sketchy.Do you know where he is buried?  If so, you might want to contact the cemetery to see if they have any records.  Some cemeteries keep excellent records that include the names of parents, others do not.  It is truly a crapshoot.

Do you know the name of the first wife?

Was William an older brother or a younger brother?  I found a family in Alabama in the 1880 census with a son named Charles E. Ingram.  His birthyear is a couple of years off, but that is common in the census.   Have you investigated this family? Could Morean W, the brother actually be the William you are talking about?
